Plant your lotus tuber in a wide shallow container using loam soil. Make a shallow trench in the surface of the soil with your hand and place the lotus tuber in the trench. Cover all but the growth tips with an inch of soil, leaving the growth tips exposed. Gently add four inches of water above the soil and place your lotus container in full sun where it will receive 8 - 12 hours of sunlight daily. In a week or two, you should have coin leaves on the surface of the water. A week or two after that you should have aerial leaves growing out of the water. Once you have aerial leaves, you may fertilize your lotus with 1/2 the recommended dosage of slow release fertilizer tabs. Two weeks after that, fertilize again with the recommended dosage of fertilizer. Fertilize every month throughout the growing/blooming season. Simply press the fertilizer tabs into the soil near the roots of your lotus, taking care not to damage the roots.
Never place your lotus near splashing water from waterfalls or fountains as this will cause your lotus to rot. Lotus prefer still water.
