Torch of Bali Hardy Water Lily (ISG Hybrid)

The Torch of Bali Water Lily is an extraordinary intersubgeneric (ISG) hybrid, created by crossing a hardy water lily with a tropical water lily. This unique pairing delivers tropical-style blooms on a plant that can overwinter as a hardy in zones down to USDA Zone 6. Unlike standard hardy water lilies, Torch of Bali produces spectacular, show-stopping flowers in abundance while maintaining strong perennial growth.

As an ISG, this variety requires a little more care than typical hardy water lilies—larger pots, heavier feeding, and more frequent division—but it rewards growers with unrivaled color and performance. Torch of Bali is best suited for large water gardens or earth-bottom ponds where it has room to thrive, but it can also flourish in oversized containers with full sun and steady feeding.

🌱 Planting & Care Instructions

  • Torch of Bali Water Lily Size: Large ISG hardy perennial

  • Spread: 5–6 feet across the water’s surface

  • Suggested Pot Size: 15–24 inch wide container minimum; larger is better for long-term growth

  • Torch of Bali Planting Depth: Plant crown so soil surface is 6–14 inches beneath the water surface for best flowering

  • Soil: Plant only in heavy loam soil (never bagged compost, aquatic planting media, pea gravel, or stones). If loam isn’t available, use PondGro Aquatic Loam Soil, mixed with up to 40% sand if needed.

  • How to Fertilize Your Torch of Bali Water Lily: Insert 4–6 Waterlily World Fertilizer Tablets on the 1st and 15th of each month throughout the growing season. ISG lilies are heavier feeders than standard hardy varieties.

  • Wintering Torch of Bali: Hardy to Zone 6 when kept shallow (about 1 foot deep) in sunny pond areas during winter

  • Fragrance: Light, sweet fragrance

  • Blooming Season: Heavy bloomer, flowers early in the day, with blooms continuing from late spring through fall
