Plant Description
Anacharis is an Submerged Oxygenating POND PLANT that grows beneath the surface of the water with narrow green leaves on long green stems. Anacharis is sold in banded bunches.
Anacharis helps in algae elimination by competing for the same nutrients that algae needs to thrive, while adding oxygen to the water. one of our favorite submerged oxygenating pond plants we carry, though availability is often limited. Submerged plants may ship in winter months as they are not subject to cold but if ordered with additonal plant they must ship together in spring when weather is warmer.
Planting Instructions
The stems of this submerged oxygenating Pond Plant can be planted on the substrate or in small containers using sand or small gravel. These Oxygenating Pond Plants can also be anchored with small weights. Anacharis helps to eliminate algae and adds oxygen to the water. You can also plant cuttings from anacharis to multiply the oxygenating benefits.Plant Restrictions
This submerged oxygenating pond plant cannot be sent into the following states because they are deemed an illegal, invasive species in those states.AL, CA, CT, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, ME, MI, MN, MS, MT, NE, NH, NY, OH, OR, PR, SC, VT, WA, WI
Note there is a similar plant, hornwort along with many other great Submerged Oxygenating Pond Plants that are legal and more winter hardy.
Hornwort which is legal, more cold tolerant, and better at nutrient uptake than Anacharis.
Submerged Oxygenating Pond Plants Shipping Information
Submerged oxygenating pond plants are shipped differently
than many other live pond plants. These plants grow below the surface of the
water, so they are not dormant in the same way hardy water lilies, bog plants,
or other seasonal pond plants may be.
Because of this, oxygenating pond plants can often be
shipped and planted during much of the year, as long as the weather is safe for
shipping and your pond is not frozen.
These underwater pond plants are a helpful addition to many
ponds, water gardens, wildlife ponds, and container water gardens. Popular
submerged oxygenating pond plants may include Vallisneria americana, hornwort,
coontail, anacharis, elodea, and other similar pond plants that grow below the
water’s surface.
When Submerged Oxygenating Pond Plants Ship
Oxygenating pond plants can generally ship most of the year.
Unlike many pond plants that are only ready during the
spring and summer growing season, submerged oxygenating pond plants often stay
available outside the main pond plant season.
However, shipping still depends on safe weather and plant
availability.
We may ship submerged oxygenating pond plants during:
- Spring
- Summer
- Fall
- Mild
winter weather - Other
times when your destination is safe for live plant delivery
These plants can often be shipped earlier or later than many
other pond plants because they grow underwater and are not waiting to “wake up”
in spring in the same way as many surface-growing plants.
When We Cannot Ship Oxygenating Pond Plants
We do not ship submerged oxygenating pond plants during
times of extreme cold when the plants may freeze in transit or arrive when your
pond is frozen.
Shipping may be delayed if:
- Your
destination is below freezing - The
pond may be frozen over - The
package may sit in freezing weather - The
plants could freeze during UPS transit - The
weather is not safe for live aquatic plants
Even though these are tough pond plants, they are still live
plants. Frozen plants in a box are not a great start to a peaceful water
garden. We would rather wait for safer weather than ship plants into conditions
where they may be damaged.
Orders With Only Oxygenating Pond Plants
If your order contains only submerged oxygenating pond
plants, we can usually ship the order most of the year, as long as the weather
is safe and the plants are available.
This may include plants such as:
Vallisneria americana
Hornwort
Coontail
Anacharis
Elodea
Other submerged oxygenating pond
plants
If you need these plants early in the season, during fall,
or during mild winter weather, please place an order that contains only these
oxygenating pond plants.
After placing your order, please email us with your order
number so we know you are requesting shipment of these submerged plants
separately from other live pond plants.

Orders With Oxygenating Pond Plants and Other Live Pond
Plants
If you add other live pond plants to the same order, your
order will ship when the other plants on the order are ready for their proper
planting time.
This is important.
If your order includes oxygenating pond plants along with
hardy water lilies, tropical water lilies, bog plants, or other seasonal pond
plants, the full order may wait until those other plants are ready to ship.
For example:
- If
you order only hornwort, coontail, anacharis, elodea, or Vallisneria
americana, your order may be able to ship earlier or later in the year. - If
you order oxygenating pond plants with hardy water lilies, your order may
ship when the hardy water lilies are ready in spring. - If
you order oxygenating pond plants with tropical water lilies, your order
may wait until tropical water lilies are ready, often later in spring. - If
you order oxygenating pond plants with other seasonal pond plants, the
order will ship when all plants on that order are ready.
We ship orders when all live plants on that order are ready
and safe to send.
How to Get Oxygenating Pond Plants Shipped Early, Fall, or
Winter
If you want submerged oxygenating pond plants shipped
outside the main pond plant season, please follow these steps:
- Place
a separate order for only oxygenating pond plants. - Do
not add hardy water lilies, tropical water lilies, bog plants, or other
live pond plants to that order. - Email
us after placing the order. - Include
your order number in the email. - Let
us know you are requesting shipment of oxygenating pond plants only. - Watch
your email for UPS tracking once the order ships.
This helps us keep your order clear and prevents
early-shipping plants from being held while waiting for later-season pond
plants.
If You Are Ordering in Fall or Winter
If you are ordering during fall or winter, we recommend
emailing us before placing your order.
This lets us check:
- Current
plant availability - Your
destination weather - Whether
your area is safe for live plant delivery - Whether
your pond is likely ready for planting - Whether
the order can ship soon or should wait for safer weather
A quick email before ordering can prevent confusion,
especially during cold weather.

How We Decide When to Ship Submerged Oxygenating Pond Plants
We look at several things before shipping live oxygenating
pond plants.
We consider:
- Are
the plants available and healthy? - Is
your order made up of only oxygenating pond plants? - Are
there other live pond plants on the order? - Is
the destination weather safe? - Is
the destination below freezing? - Is
the pond likely to be frozen over? - Can
the plants travel safely by UPS? - Is
this a good time for the customer to receive and plant them?
Our goal is simple. We want your oxygenating pond plants to
arrive alive, usable, and ready to place in your pond or water garden.
How Oxygenating Pond Plants Are Shipped
We ship submerged oxygenating pond plants by UPS.
When your order ships, you will receive tracking information
by email. Please watch your tracking closely so you know when your plants are
on the way.
You may receive email updates when:
- Your
order ships - Your
package is out for delivery - Your
package has been delivered
These tracking emails are important because submerged
oxygenating pond plants should be opened and placed in water as soon as
possible after arrival.
What to Expect When Oxygenating Pond Plants Arrive
Submerged oxygenating pond plants do not usually look like
potted flowering pond plants when they arrive.
That is normal.
These plants grow below the water’s surface, so they may
arrive as stems, bunches, cuttings, bare-root plants, or rooted sections,
depending on the type of plant.
You may see:
- Flexible
stems - Fine
leaves - Loose
pieces - Rooted
sections - Bunched
plants - Slight
bending from shipping - Some
soft or older growth
This is common for live submerged pond plants. Minor
shipping stress does not usually mean the plants are unhealthy.
Once placed in the pond, healthy submerged oxygenating pond
plants can settle in and continue growing below the surface.
What to Do When Your Oxygenating Pond Plants Arrive
Please care for your plants right away.
Follow these steps:
- Bring
the package inside or into the shade as soon as it is delivered. - Open
the box right away. - Remove
the plants carefully. - Keep
the plants wet. - Do not
allow them to dry out. - Place
them in your pond, water garden, tub, or container of dechlorinated water. - Keep
them out of hot sun while unpacking. - Plant,
anchor, or place them according to the needs of that plant type.
Submerged oxygenating pond plants should not sit dry on a
table, porch, driveway, or patio. They are underwater plants, and they are not
fans of pretending to be houseplants.
If Your Pond Is Frozen
Do not place oxygenating pond plants into a frozen pond.
If your pond is frozen over, wait until the ice has melted
and the plants can be safely placed below the surface of the water.
If you are unsure whether your pond is ready, email us
before ordering during cold weather.
