Bangkok Volcano in Snow Hardy Water Lily — “Lava on Snow” Blooms

Bangkok Volcano in Snow (Nymphaea ‘Bangkok Volcano in Snow’) is a striking new hardy water lily from Thailand created by Jakkaphong Sung-ngam. The flowers are pure white with dramatic red streaks—like lava flowing over snow—making this one of the boldest hardy water lilies to hit the water-garden world in years. Even between blooms, the foliage keeps the show going: brown-to-bronze pads with green speckles that look exotic and artistic on the pond surface.

This is a true collector hardy water lily and a rare mutation-style breakthrough in hardy breeding—perfect for gardeners who want something genuinely different in their lineup of pond plants.

Why Customers Love It

  • Unique “lava on snow” flowers (white petals with red streaks)

  • Speckled bronze foliage adds interest even when not blooming

  • Hardy perennial water lily that returns every year when planted properly

  • A standout centerpiece for lined ponds, container ponds, and earth-bottom shelves

Plant Requirements (quick reference)

  • Sun: Full sun, 6+ hours of strong midday light

  • Container: 15–20"+ wide, shallow aquatic container (fabric pots preferred)

  • Depth (soil surface → water surface): 8–18" (shallower = more flowers)

  • Spread: ~3.5–4.5 ft at maturity

  • Flower size: ~4–5.5" across

  • Soil: Heavy loam topsoil only (no bagged mix, peat, “aquatic media,” or gravel)

Care & Fertilizing (simple schedule)

  • Fertilizer tablets: 4–6 tablets on the 1st & 15th each month (May–September)

  • Application: Push tablets 3–4" into the soil around (not on) the crown

  • Maintenance: Trim spent blooms/yellow leaves; divide every 1–2 years if crowded

Water Lily Planting Tips

  • Plant shallower (8–12") to warm the crown and boost bud production

  • Keep surface water open and unshaded—pads are your solar panels for blooms

  • Never cover the crown with stones or gravel; leave it slightly exposed

  • Give it space—avoid floaters piling up on pads and blocking sunlight

Do’s & Don’ts

Do

  • Plant in full sun and heavy loam

  • Fertilize twice monthly for steady blooms and strong growth

  • Repot immediately on arrival; keep all parts wet while planting

Don’t

  • ❌ Don’t use compost/peat mixes, “aquatic media,” or gravel

  • ❌ Don’t let floating plants shade the pads

  • ❌ Don’t plant too deep (>18") if you want frequent blooms

Shipped as: a live young adult plant (rhizome with leaves/lilypads). Plant immediately in heavy loam soil and set at the recommended depth. Minor leaf yellowing from transit is normal and quickly replaced by new growth.
