Cardinal Flower grows well in moist, loam soil and part sun/part shade in northern climates, moist soil and part shade in the southern states. Keep soil moist. Mulch soil to help keep plants consistently moist if above the waterline. Mulching in the fall will help keep plants from heaving in the winter, north of zone 5. The plants can grow 1 - 2 inches below the waterline, but grow best slightly above the water line.
