Most Water Lilies are not very small, a few are but still require quite a space of leaves on the surface in full direct (totally unobsucured) sunlight. This inludes other plants and other water lilies on the surface crowding them. Often folks crowd them in tubs with floating plants, water hyacinth, duckweed, or just simply not a wide enough tank or tub. We suggest 30 inches across of space for most lilies, a few like Helvola, Murasaki, Dauben, Sup Sothorn, Prannatee, Micrantha, Mae Naeng Noi, Nin Natee, Izia, and Snow Princess can do okay at 24 inches across. Murasaki, Micrantha, Prannatee, Dauben, Nin Natee, Mae Naeng, and Sup Sothorn are the easiest, yes they are annuals but they bloom incredibly easy. The rest we would suggest 30 inches wide or better. All annual lilies bloom more often, daily if fertilized than perennials. In the far northern USA zone 3-6 unless you can put a deicer in your above ground tank or tub outside in winter or perhaps into an inground pond be it yours or a friends you may not be able to keep any plant overwinter if the small system freezes solid so for those annual lilies would give you a better bang for your buck, dont be afraid to try them you will get 10x the flowers in any part of the USA.
