Grower’s Choice Hardy Water Lilies – Always the Best Bloom of the Day

The Peach Grower’s Choice Hardy Water Lily is perfect for gardeners who want dependable beauty without waiting for a specific named cultivar. With this option, you pick the color family you’d like — red, pink, white, yellow, peach, or bi-color — and our growers select the best-looking hardy water lily available on the day we pack your order.

This ensures you receive a strong, healthy plant that is ready to thrive in your pond immediately, rather than waiting until a certain named variety reaches shipping size. Every Grower’s Choice Hardy Water Lily is hand-selected for bloom potential, color quality, and vigorous growth.

Most selections will be medium to large water lilies, making them ideal for garden ponds, lined ponds, or earth-bottom ponds. Please note, this option is not recommended for very small containers or mini water gardens, as pygmy or micro lilies are rarely included in Grower’s Choice.

Grower’s Choice Hardy Water Lily Proper Planting and Care

  • Planting Depth: 6–24 inches from the top of the pot to the water’s surface

  • Container Size: 12–16 inch wide container minimum; 15 inches or more preferred for larger lilies

  • Soil: Use heavy loam topsoil only — never bagged compost, peat mixes, or gravel

  • Sunlight Needs: At least 6–7 hours of full direct sun daily

  • Plant Size: Typically medium to large, with spreads from 3–6 feet depending on the cultivar chosen

Grower’s Choice Hardy Water Lily Fertilizing Schedule

  • Fertilize on the 1st and 15th of each month during the growing season (April through September)

  • Use 4–5 Waterlily World Fertilizer Tablets per feeding, pushed 3–4 inches into the soil near the rhizome

  • Consistent fertilizing ensures continual flowering throughout the summer months

Do’s and Don’ts for Grower’s Choice Hardy Water Lily

Do’s
✅ Plant your Grower’s Choice Hardy Water Lily in full direct sunlight for maximum blooms
✅ Use wide containers with heavy loam soil for best results
✅ Fertilize regularly throughout the growing season
✅ Divide rhizomes as needed to prevent overcrowding and maintain strong blooming

Don’ts
❌ Do not use bagged compost, peat, or aquatic planting media — these float and rot in water
❌ Do not cover the crown with stones or gravel — this suffocates the rhizome and reduces flowering
❌ Do not let your water lily dry out during unpacking — plant immediately, keeping stems and roots wet at all times
❌ Do not allow floating plants (like water lettuce or hyacinths) to shade the pads — lilies need open water surface for full sun exposure
❌ Do not plant hardy water lilies too close together — each needs space for its leaves to spread and “collect sunlight” to fuel blooms
